OnX Pairs With Cameron Steele to Demo Off-Road Mapping Tech

Off-road GPS provider onX recently announced updates to its flagship app, and is now putting it to the test through a new partnership with Cameron Steele and the Desert Assassins.

An accomplished off-road racer, Steele will put the tech through its paces on the Baja Peninsula and California’s Johnson Valley. OnX said his travels will help it improve the mapping features, which cover trails in the US, Mexico, and Canada. Company GM Rory Edwards said, “We’re really excited and proud to partner with Cameron Steele. Given how much time he spends exploring and giving back to the off-road communities across North America, it only made sense to bring him onboard.”

The onX app provides trail maps with offline navigation and real-time tracking. Recent updates brought a Guided Trails Rating System with difficulty scores and terrain classifications. Users can access points of interest along the trails, and the improved interface makes maps easier to read and use. OnX says its maps include more than 615,000 miles of trails and 852 million acres of public lands, so you’re covered almost anywhere you can reach on four wheels.

Although the app will undoubtedly be helpful, Steele’s résumé suggests he doesn’t need much assistance. He’s a trophy truck driver, Baja 1000 racer, and a member of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. Steele noted onX’s safety features, saying that “it has totally changed the way we plan and organize our events and racing efforts.”
