2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the BFGoodrich Mint 400. Although UTV’s weren’t around in the early days our editors were. We grew up watching on the sidelines then participating in this iconic event. Now UTV’s have taken over and are filling up over 30-percent of the field. In four classes, 142 Turbo, non turbo, pro and sportsman teams will compete in the morning race. The Trick Trucks and big buggies will race later that afternoon. With 69 entries the Pro Turbo UTV class it’s the biggest in entire event.
Based on a formula of factors including past results, draw positions, DNF’s, points and voodoo magic, we have put together our top 11 picks in the premier, Pro, Normally Aspirated class and the top 21 in the Turbo class. Why 11 and 21 you ask? It’s Vegas baby! Over the last three years our picks were 90-percent accurate half of the time so just getting on this list is an accomplishment.
First, there are some notable names running in the sportsman and unlimited classes worth mentioning. Rhys Millen entered his Polaris RZR in the Unlimited class along with Robby Gordon and PJ Jones. Robby and PJ are still running the turbo powered Wild Cat’s that aren’t yet production machines. Rumor has it, that Rhys is using the morning UTV race to pre run for the truck race taking place later in the afternoon. Robby’s 9 year old son Max will be piloting another Wild Cat in the sportsman class.
The first production Textron Wild Cat XX is entered in the Pro Non Turbo class with Ray Bulloch behind the wheel. Unfortunately, Bulloch is starting far back in 28th place so getting the W from there is going to be tough. If you are starting any deeper than that, you can only hope for a good finish because a win would be a miracle. Notable names starting deep in the the Turbo field include Dan Fisher, Ryan Holz, Wayne Matlock, Justin Lambert and in 68th place, Craig Scanlon who it turns out, can’t even buy a good draw.
