Lots of horsepower, lots of suspension travel, lots of skid plates, top-shelf equipment.
72-incher costs Brink’s-truck money. The 64-incher doesn’t cost that much less than the 72-incher but sacrifices a lot of extras thrown at the wider rig.
These are the UTVs at the heart of builds used to win the Rock Race at KOH for the past four years; they start at excellent (64) and stop at even better (72). It seems a bit out of touch to call the 64-inch trim the “budget” model at $29,000—the 72 starts at $33,000—but getting over boulders in one piece has never been cheap.
“RC” stands for “Rock Crawling,” it could also stand for “rock conquering.” The least of these will get you adjustable Fox 2.5 Podium QS3 Shocks, a 4,500-pound winch and front bumper, skid plating for the control arms front and rear, quarter doors, and the 7.6-inch cockpit display. The 72 gets its elbows out with the wider stance, upgrades the dampers to RC2s with more travel, adds beefier Trophy Truck–inspired control arms, larger tires with beadlock wheels, half doors, intrusion bars, a metal roof, and more.
No major changes for 2023 after receiving Smart-Lok front differential and a slight increase in engine output from 195 to 200 hp for 2022. This year, the colorway for both changes from Chalk Gray and Magma Red to Mineral Gray and Desert Tan.
2023 Can-Am Maverick X3 X RC Turbo RR 64 MSRP: $28,899
2023 Can-Am Maverick X3 X RC Turbo RR 72 MSRP: $32,899
Prices rise $1,500 for the 64 and $2,300 for the 72, plus a $400 commodity surcharge for both.
The 72-incher is the most expensive two-seat Maverick in the Can-Am catalog, with the build sheet to justify the price. If trails in your neck of the woods out to the rocks are especially narrow, consider the 64. Otherwise, buy the keys to the 72.
Both trims are powered by the 900cc Rotax ACE three-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 200 hp. Can-Am’s PDrive and QRS-X CVT get power to the chosen wheels. The Smart-Lok front differential unlocks four traction modes that can be adjusted on the fly.
The RC 64 rides on a Fox 2.5 Podium QS3 suspension providing 18 inches of travel front and rear. The RC 72 trim swaps for front Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 piggyback shocks providing 22 inches of travel and Fox 3.0 Podium RC2 dampers with remote reservoirs in back providing 24 inches of travel. Beyond the sweep, the differences are in adjustability. The QS3s can be adjusted for compression, the RC2 shocks allow tuning for dual-speed compression and rebound.
There’s some cost-cutting here, Can-Am going with solid rotors instead of the ventilated units from 2022. The front axle hangs a pair of 262mm rotors clamped by hydraulic twin-piston calipers. The rear axle hangs 248mm rotors with another set of hydraulic twin-piston calipers.
The leaned-back seating position can’t be changed, but there are four-way-adjustable seats, an adjustable steering wheel, and a rearview mirror to make the best of it. The RC 72 adds four-point harnesses, half doors, an aluminum roof, and intrusion bars doing their part to enhance occupant safety.
The rear cargo area is rated for 200 pounds of gear. Managing loads can be made easier with the built-in LinQ quick-attach system.
Neither rig is rated to tow anything. However, tow hooks at both ends of both rigs will enable third-party rescue if you’re in a pickle the 4,500-pound winch can’t get you out of.
There’s a 7.6-inch digital display with a keypad behind the steering wheel. Information includes a speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip- and hourmeters, fuel, gear position, Sport and Eco modes, seatbelt and 4x4 indicator, front and rear diff lock indicators, diagnostics, clock, battery voltage, engine temperature, and DPS mode.
Full LED lighting comes standard on both, powered by an 850-watt magneto burly enough to power the kinds of aftermarket accessories you’d want on a rock crawler.
The 4,500-pound winch with synthetic rope comes standard.
A six-month limited warranty is included with every Maverick X3 model. Extended warranty options are available at time of purchase.
