Speed UTV did its best to silence its many critics last week by winning the UTV Overall class at the NORRA 500. Robby Gordon’s son, Max, drove the winning rig, finishing the race in just over nine hours, nearly a half-hour ahead of the next UTV. The NORRA 500 is the little brother race to the famed NORRA 1000, but instead of running down the Baja Peninsula from Ensenada, Mexico, the 500 starts and ends in the iconic town.
Speed UTV entered five cars in the race, all of which managed to finish. That’s a huge achievement in and of itself, but the victory puts an exclamation point on the effort. The race also puts a nice bow on what has been a very good couple of months for Speed UTV, which delivered its first units to customers last month.
Starting a new company of any kind is a huge undertaking, but for a small manufacturer building something as complicated as a UTV, that effort grows by orders of magnitude. Thanks to years of delays and missed deadlines, Speed UTV has endured some pretty harsh criticism. There’s still a long way to go before the company could be considered truly successful, but this is a big milestone.
