Monimoto’s New GPS Tracker Is Here

We take a look at a new, rechargeable Monimoto 9 GPS tracker.

Chances are, your side-by-side is more than a toy. It represents all the hard work that went into buying the machine, all the effort aimed at making it yours, and all the memories you’ve made behind the wheel. That’s why having your rig stolen is everyone’s worst nightmare. Sure, insurance might cover some portion of the vehicle’s value, but there’s no replacing what you’ve built. That’s why we’re big fans of discreet GPS trackers around here. They won’t keep thieves from swiping your machine, but they can help law enforcement recover your rig if the worst happens. In the past, we’ve relied on the Monimoto 7 to know where our machines are at all times. Now the company has a new unit, the Monimoto 9, and we got our hands on one to see how it works.

Both the transponder and the key fob are smaller than the Monimoto 7.Zach Bowman

The unit is considerably smaller and lighter than the old 7, but the biggest difference is the new rechargeable battery. Plug the thing into a USB-C, and it tops off in short order. Monimoto claims the battery is good for about 12 months on a single charge, which is insane. We still snugged our unit in a hidden spot that’s still easily accessible when it comes time for a recharge.

Like the Monimoto 7, the new unit is easy to set up. The kit comes with a transponder, a key fob, and a couple of nice zip-ties. Pop open the key fob, pull out the battery tab to wake the device up, and plug in the transponder to make certain the battery’s at 100 percent. You’ll need to download the Monimoto app, but from start to finish, we had everything up and running in less than 30 minutes.

Setup is easy, and the app is intuitive.Zach Bowman

The system is simple enough. The key fob lives with the machine’s key. If the transponder detects vehicle movement without the key fob nearby, it sends an alert to your phone via text message, at which point you can track the transponder’s location on the Monimoto app. The app also gives you transponder battery life, which is nice. You can also add multiple Monimoto devices and name them depending on which vehicle they’re associated with, so it’s easy to manage a fleet.

The unit is made in the European Union, and feels like it can stand up to a good bit of abuse. The transponder and key fob are both IP68 rated, which means they can be submerged in 5 feet of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

At $169, the Monimoto 9 is cheap insurance. The price includes two free months of free SIM cell connection, but Monimoto requires a $49-per-year subscription after that.

We’ve squirreled ours away on one of our favorite rigs, and will keep you updated on how the unit performs moving forward. For more information, head over to Monimoto’s site.
