New truck sales took an interesting turn last month, according to The Fast Lane Truck, with the brand-new compact 2022 Ford Maverick outselling both the full-size Toyota Tundra and its brand mate, the Ford Ranger.
According to data from GoodCarBadCar covered in the TFL report, Ford moved 6,513 Mavericks in January, compared to 5,237 Rangers over the same month. Toyota moved 4,952 Tundras in the first month of the year. Sales figures for both the Ranger and the Tundra are way down over last year, the data show. In January of 2021, Ford sold 6,102 Rangers, while Toyota moved 6,334 Tundras.
Some of the sales drop is probably attributable to reduced supply thanks to the global microchip shortage. But the Maverick’s popularity shouldn’t be a surprise. The segment of unibody light-duty trucks is expanding, with the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz joining the Maverick and the venerable Honda Ridgeline in the segment.
As the supply chain normalizes, we expect to see the sales figures for traditional trucks rebound, but the Maverick looks set to be a perpetual sales hit.
