Polaris had a surprise waiting for us in Minnesota. After a day of playing with the company’s newest hardware, we hopped on a bus and took a short ride down to a quarry, where a pre-production version of the 2022 Polaris Ranger EV was waiting to show off. After a lengthy disclaimer about exceeding the recommended towing capacity, Polaris hitched its new EV to a one-ton dually Chevrolet pickup and an empty enclosed fifth-wheel trailer. The truck alone weighs in at around 7,000 lbs. The electric Ranger then proceeded to pull the load across flat ground without breaking a sweat.
That was impressive enough, but the entertaining part came after Polaris unhitched the truck. Unladen, the Ranger EV provided us with an acceleration demonstration. Make no mistake, this thing will be the fastest utility side-by-side on sale when it bows next year. It isn’t just quick. It’s fast. Odds are it will have no trouble embarrassing 100-horsepower sport units in a straight line, too.
Polaris says the full-size electric ranger will be available in December as a ‘22 model. With hardware borrowed from Polaris’ electric partner Zero, the thing promises to be both fun and capable. We can’t wait to get our hands on it.
