Chevrolet’s heavy-duty Silverado line has finally received a much-needed makeover. The current 2500 HD and 3500 HD already felt behind the times when they hit the streets for the 2020 model year, and the competition has only opened that gap since. For 2024, Chevy has stepped up to the plate with big upgrades like a new interior, updated styling, improved towing technology, and a new gearbox paired to the gasoline-powered engines. Chevy didn’t swing for the fences but carefully improved the Silverado across the board.
Horsepower and torque are always a headline for heavy-duty pickups, so Chevrolet spent time reworking the diesel engine that sits atop the Silverado’s engine option sheet. The 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel now makes 470 hp and 975 lb.-ft. of torque, up from 445 hp and 910 lb.-ft. in its current form. Chevy claims the new configuration can provide up to 25 percent more low-end torque. The 6.6-liter gas engine’s output is unchanged for 2024, but the six-speed transmission is replaced by the same Allison 10-speed that backs the big diesel. The gasser does get a boost in its maximum GVWR though, jumping from 24,000 to 26,000 pounds.
The 2024 Silverado HD lineup gets other changes that should make it better to use and look at. The front end features a new fascia, new headlights, new grille, C-shaped LED graphic lamps, and “Chevrolet” lettering stamped on the hood scoop. On the inside, the Silverado’s interior is new, carried over from the 1500-class rigs. There’s an available 13.4-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, both of which contribute to a wholly redesigned cabin. Wireless phone charging and a head-up display are also available. Better yet, second-row passengers get climate vents and controls.
The new Silverado HD aims to make towing better with a slew of tools to improve the ease and safety of trailering. Adaptive cruise control can now be used with a trailer attached, and it accounts for the additional drag and increased braking distances present when towing. Chevy’s Enhanced Transparent Trailer has been revised to work with fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers, and the company’s Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert decreases the hazards of blind spots. GCW Alert uses tech wizardry to alert the driver if the combined weight of the truck and trailer exceed the vehicle’s gross combined weight rating.
For the off-roaders, the ZR2 trim makes its way to the HD lineup for the first time later this year. It’s poised to battle the likes of the Ford F-250 Tremor and the Ram Power Wagon.
The 2024 Silverado HD line makes its public debut at the 2022 State Fair of Texas, starting with the press day on September 29. Production is set to begin in 2023 at General Motors’ Flint plant in Michigan and at the Oshawa, Ontario, plant in Canada. Pricing will be available closer to the start of production.
“We’ve designed the Silverado HD to be our customers’ favored choice for true truck capability,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. “The enhancements to the 2024 model build on its core strengths to provide an even stronger balance of the design, strength and confidence that makes tackling the hard jobs, including trailering, easier and more convenient than ever.”
