The horsepower wars are far from over. Polaris just released an Instagram teaser promising an available 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine for the 2022 RZR. Keen eyes will recognize the powerplant as the same Prostar engine found in the company’s Slingshot three-wheeler. In that application, the engine manages a lofty 203 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque, but we’d wager those numbers will swell in this newest application. That puts the RZR neck and neck with the 200-horsepower 2022 Can-Am Maverick X3.
It’s worth noting that the Can-Am makes its power thanks to a turbocharger while the Polaris Prostar 2.0-liter four-cylinder is naturally aspirated. Makes us wonder what the engine could do with a little forced induction. The aftermarket has been bolting turbos to Slingshots for years, with conservative builds managing more than 260 horsepower.
Does the RZR need that much grunt? Does the sun rise in the east? We’ll find out more details soon. Polaris is set to unveil the 2022 RZR lineup on November 9. Stay tuned for more information.
