Volcon, the EV powersports company and makers of the Grunt motorcycle and Stag side-by-side, just shut down its main manufacturing facility in Round Rock, Texas, in favor of moving production out of house. This is part of a “comprehensive program and manufacturing transition aimed at efforts to improve profitability and cash flow,” according to the company.
Volcon has formed a manufacturing agreement with automotive parts supplier and manufacturer GLV Ventures. GLV will manufacture all current and future models of the Grunt EV motorcycle and the Stag EV side-by-side.
Volcon is also attempting to lower the number of Chinese parts used in its vehicles, hoping to source more parts from the US and other North American countries. To that end Volcon recently announced that it has partnered with General Motors.
Of course, this all means that there will be layoffs within Volcon’s facilities. “As part of this program, we’ve made the difficult decision to reduce the size of the Volcon team. This was a very difficult decision as we recognize that we are losing quality teammates. We thank them for their dedication to building a great product as we could not have brought the Grunt to market without them,” Volcon CEO Jordan Davis said.
Volcon said the move will reduce unnecessary spending and will cut down on labor, manufacturing, and operating expenses. The company is also hoping that since it will be sourcing more parts from North America, the rate at which new products are launched will increase. At the moment, Volcon is focusing efforts to manufacture and ship the Stag so it will start seeing profits from the sale, instead of only $100 nonbinding down payments.
