The long-awaited Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route officially opened February 1, and the GPS tracks and course maps are available for purchase and download on the BDR website. It’s an exciting prospect, as you can now link BDRs from the border with Mexico in New Mexico, through Colorado, and all the way from the bottom to the top of Wyoming. There’s no word yet on a Montana BDR, but if and when one breaks cover, it could mean a dedicated backcountry route all the way from Mexico to Canada.
Unfortunately, BDRs currently cater mostly to adventure motorcycles, because they’re designed for street-legal vehicles. That means you’re more or less out of luck in New Mexico and Colorado. But if you live in Wyoming, it’s possible to get a plate for your ATV or side-by-side with an MPV—or multipurpose vehicle—registration.
That ostensibly means that the whole 897-mile Wyoming BDR, which runs from Baggs at the Colorado border all the way north through Burgess to the Montana border, could be run in a side-by-side. The route winds through the middle of the state, crossing the Sierra Madre, Medicine Bow, and Wind River mountains. The route crosses two 11,000-foot peaks, and is the most remote BDR yet.
