West Virginia’s Hatfield-McCoy Trails are expanding by about 150 miles on March 1 when the brand-new Cabwaylingo Trail and newly revamped Ivy Branch Trail open to traffic.
Cabwaylingo is the big headline here, as the 100-mile trail network in southern West Virginia is brand new, and is a partnership between the West Virginia State Parks system and Hatfield-McCoy Trails. It’s also the first trail in the network to be situated entirely within a state forest.

The Cabwaylingo State Forest covers 8,300 acres and takes its bananas name from the four surrounding counties of Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, and Mingo. The trail system is served by 14 new cabins that will be open from mid-April to October. Parking, merchandise, and permits will all be available at the trailhead.
Further north, the 50-mile Ivy Branch Trail near Charleston, West Virginia, is reopening. The trail is near Ivy Branch ATV Resort, Pappy’s Cabin, and Mountain Mama Lodging. The trail system is also renovating six rental cabins, which will be open later.
For cool-down breaks between rips, the trail runs close to the Little Coal River, which has a brand-new canoe and kayak launch convenient to the trail.

Both trails are part of the larger 800-odd-mile Hatfield-McCoy Trails network, and both accommodate UTVs, dirt bikes, and 4x4s. The whole network snakes through country that gave West Virginia its “Wild and Wonderful” moniker, and should be on your bucket list.
