Can-Am Racers Recap Its 2025 KOH Prep and Experiences Summary

A Rock Race class win and the first UTV victory in the Race of Kings.

Can-Am and Polaris opened their 2025 race seasons at the Dakar Rally. There, Polaris won the overall in the SSV class with Brock Heger while Can-Am won 10 of the race’s 12 stages. The UTV titans next met in the California desert at King of the Hammers, the starting bell for the US race season, where Can-Am earned some payback. Cody Miller won the 4900 Pro Mod UTV class in the Can-Am UTV Hammers Championship Race, usually referred to as the Rock Race. And Kyle Chaney won the Race of Kings in a Maverick R, marking the first time a UTV has won the Super Bowl event at KOH.

Can-Am put together a recap of the on-site lead-up to the big races, and let its racers tell their own stories about how they’d deal with the challenges. At separate points, Dustin Jones and Chaney walk the course to explain some of the toughest obstacles. When Jones, who says he’s 6 feet, 7-1/2 inches tall, squares up with the 10-foot rock walls at Back Door, the uninitiated can begin to understand the havoc of KOH. And even then he says, “Video does not do it justice.”

Chaney, on the other hand, bounces between ridiculous, matter-of-fact assessments, and arcane racer wisdom. Walking a stretch of the qualifying loop, he says, “Off-camber rocks on an off-camber hill. If you don’t hit it fast enough, you’re just going to roll [sideways] down the hill” with the same tone someone would say, “I’d like a cheese pizza.” Explaining another tricky section of rock, he lets us know, “It’s not where you’re at, it’s where you’re going.” Well OK then. If you’re Chaney, that’s to the winner’s circle and not sideways down a hill.

Oh, and to clear up the KOH class lingo, the 4900 UTV class runs the Rock Race and is limited to tires no larger than 35 inches. The 4400 Unlimited class can run practically any size tire—this class lives up to its name—so Chaney runs a Maverick X3 modified to accept 37s.
