Watch a Motocross Pro Wreck a Maverick R at Pastranaland

Even motocross champions mess up.

Somewhere in this video there’s a race between Travis Pastrana, motocross champ Ryan Sipes, Pastrana acolyte Nate Wessel, and rally driver Gray Leadbetter. The idea is that each driver gets three tries to best Pastrana’s time in a Can-Am Maverick R, or in Wessel’s case a Can-Am Maverick X3.

When a massive tree marks the apex, you can’t clip the apex. Someone tell Ryan Sipes.Channel 199

The catch is, of course, that Pastrana has been a professional rally driver, a Gymkhana hero, a Can-Am ambassador, and he built the track. The other drivers have either never driven a Can-Am, never raced on four wheels, never seen the track, or some combination of all of those. To even the playing field, Pastrana bets them all $1 they cannot get within a second of his time, but offers $100 if they can beat him.

Even Leadbetter, the ace shoe of the bunch, barely got within two seconds of Pastrana. Sipes managed to close the gap to 1.57 seconds on a second attempt.

Anyway, the fun part is at the end, when Sipes and Leadbetter head out for a coaching session. With Leadbetter riding shotgun, Sipes cuts the final corner a little—a lot—too close. They end up hitting a tree, rolling the Mav R, and deleting its driver’s side front wheel and suspension. Check out the video to see the carnage for yourself.
