OnX Offroad’s mapping products help riders navigate tough terrain, track weather conditions, and find points of interest along the trail, and the company recently updated the app with a new feature that maps cellphone coverage layers.
While it might seem like riders could just pull out their phone to judge coverage, having a map of available service areas could help navigate out of a tough situation and get help. OnX Offroad senior product manager Andy Zielinski said, “Knowing that cellphone service exists gives many off-roaders peace of mind. They can stay in touch with family members, check in at the office, and if something unexpected happens—they can call for help. On the other hand, intrepid off-roaders can use these new layers to get away from it all and find places to fully unplug. These layers are another way for onX Offroad to provide app users with the most accurate, reliable, and relevant information for their adventure at hand.”
The new app feature offers views with real-time network coverage information that provides signal strength data. Users can also download maps for times when they are far from a cell tower, and the app lets them overlay cell coverage information onto other maps. The app works with Apple CarPlay- and Android Auto-enabled vehicles and is available for onX Offroad Premium and Elite members.
