Even if Phil Smage’s name doesn’t sound familiar, you’ve probably seen his work. Six years ago he attempted to set a world-record jump in a side-by-side as part of the Nitro Circus, crashing in spectacular fashion. Clips of that wreck were everywhere, and Smage, who had spent his life as an action sports star, suddenly found himself staring at a bleak prognosis. Doctors said he may never walk again. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case, and Smage has been busy getting back to doing what he loves and dabbling in new hobbies. Those include training cats? Apparently?
Smage took some time to chat with Travis Pastrana’s Channel 199 about his career, the crash, and the road to recovery, and exactly what it means to be a regular at Pastranaland. He’s living proof that the right attitude and determination can carry you through bleak days, and that powersports are about more than going fast and flying high. Check out the clip below.
