See What Desert Racing Is Really Like Thanks to Speed UTV

This sort of thing takes a capable vehicle and tons of skill.

Watching desert racing from the comfort of your living room, it’s easy to assume that the ultra-high-tech vehicles pounding across the sand make the job easy, but that’s very far from the truth. Speed UTV recently posted a video of Robby and Max Gordon racing in the 2025 San Felipe 250, and their experience looks anything but smooth.

Before going too far it’s important to point out that, yes, the vehicle the Gordons are driving is far more capable of handling high-speed dune running than anything a normal buyer could grab off the shelf. It’s able to soak up massive drops and it eats terrain like it’s nothing, but there’s a lot going on inside the cockpit.

The driver must make constant steering inputs to keep the vehicle on the course, and at one point, the pair had to pull over for repairs. That’s not totally surprising, as the San Felipe 250 is considered one of the most challenging races of the off-road calendar. It’s held each year on the Baja California peninsula and covers a 250-mile looped course. The Gordons ultimately ended the race with a did-not-finish result, though they were in good company, as there were dozens of competitors unable to finish this year’s race.
