Watch a Can-Am Maverick R Take It to a Trophy Truck

An almost half-million-dollar rig beats a consumer-grade UTV. Barely.

There is no better tool for bashing through the desert than a race-prepped trophy truck, but few people have the resources to buy one, let alone run it. Travis Pastrana’s Channel 199 YouTube channel recently pitted a $450,000 trophy truck against a $35,499 Can-Am Maverick R to see how close the far more affordable vehicle could come to the race-bred pickup.

The Maverick R performed extremely well, especially on smoother, straighter parts of the desert testing course. That said, the truck didn’t complete the course after ending up stuck in a bush the first time around. Once it got going, the trophy truck put together an impressive time on the 10-mile loop course, with the passenger saying that it was horrifyingly fast.

Ultimately, the truck lapped the course more than a minute faster than the Can-Am, but Pastrana said he felt the UTV could’ve done more with better tires and a more aggressive driver. While both are more than capable of delivering thrills in the sand, the trophy truck’s dedicated design and focused performance makes it a much more capable rig.

That said, how many of you have a spare $450,000 lying around for a weekend trail toy? The good news for the majority of us who don’t have that kind of money is that you can rent the trucks and take a course to get out into the sand without wrecking a half-million dollars of your own money in the dunes.
