Utah resident Darren Webster suffered horrifying injuries in a wreck in Ensenada, Mexico, last month in the lead-up to the Baja 1000. Webster, along with two other people, was run over when a trophy truck suddenly accelerated into a crowd. Clips of the crash quickly circulated the web, and the scene was predictably horrifying.
Two spectators were killed, and Webster suffered heinous injuries. According to an interview with his friend, Webster’s hand was nearly severed and his pelvis crushed. Webster was in Mexico with Canguro Racing to run their modified Toyota Land Cruiser at the event. Webster now is back in his home state, but faces a long road to recovery. The full story is available from Salt Lake City, Utah, NBC affiliate KSL TV5.
Webster’s US insurance won’t cover the surgeries and treatments he received in Mexico. To help pay for Webster’s treatment, his family has set up a GoFundMe page. The campaign is fully funded, but throwing a little more support Webster’s way can’t hurt.
It’s unclear why the trophy truck accelerated when it did, but SCORE and local authorities immediately impounded the truck and arrested the driver.
